Attempts to transmit bean golden mosaic virus from brazil by mechanical inoculation

Attempts made by several investigators in Brazil to transmit bean golden mosaic virus by mechanical inoculation have failed. An extensive series of mechanical inoculation tests with a wide range of isolates was carried out during two years by the writers. Several bean varieties and susceptible species of Phaseolus were tried as virus donor and test plants; variations in the method of sampling for the inocula, different extracting solutions and inoculation techniques were tried. Also, the techniques used by investigators that reported success in the mechanical transmission of similar viruses that occur in other countries were meticulously repeated. All results were negative. The negative results obtained in Brazil in the mechanical transmission of the bean golden mosaic virus indicate that isolates of the local complex are less stable or possess the characteristics that make them difficult to be transmitted mechanical. Notwithstanding these negative results, it seems likely that eventually other techniques or the discovery of a new variant or mutant of the complex, might lead to the mechanical transmission of one or more components of the bean golden mosaic virus complex of Brazil.
