Attenuation of babesia argentina babesia bovis strain isolated in colombia

Attenuation of babesia argentina babesia bovis strain isolated in colombia

Revista del Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario 14(1): 33-40

B. argentina (B. bovis), isolated in Monteria, Colombia, was attenuated by continuous passages in splenectomized calves. The attenuated behavior was observed beginning with the 23rd passage. A comparative statistical study made with 3 groups of animals showed significant differences between groups. A group of 20 steers was inoculated with 1010 B. argentina parasites of the virulent strain (passage no. 6). Another group of 30 steers was inoculated with 1010 B. argentina parasites of the attenuated strain (passage no. 27). Another group of 10 steers, non-inoculated, was left as control group. Of the 20 animals inoculated with the virulent parasite, 10 showed clinical symptoms of acute babesiosis and 9 animals died between days 11 and 14 post-inoculation (p.i.). None of the 30 animals inoculated with the attenuated parasite showed clinical symptoms of the disease; only a slight decrease in the average hematocrit on day 14 p.i. (-6.5%) and slight rise in the average temperature on day 11 p.i. (+0.32.degree. C) was seen. The implications of the utilization of this attenuated B. argentina strain for the control and prevention of bovine babesiosis are obvious.
