Fourteen strains of A. chroococcum were used for seed inoculation of wheat, maize and cotton to study their ability to establish in the root environment, under sterile sand culture conditions. Preferential growth on the root bits of these plants by various strains was observed. Consideration of plant-bacterial strain affinities in selecting strains of Azotobacter for bacterial inoculants is emphasized.
