Mylar strips were inserted into periodontal pockets [human teeth] immediately after thorough scaling and root planing, removed after 5 min and examined for microbial populations. A viable flora was present subgingivally, probably attached loosely to the soft tissue pocket lining or from colonies which are present in microscopic cracks previously occupied by Sharpey's fibers.
