GEnetic, environmental and phenotypic relationships among some growth and carcass traits of Japanese Brown Cattle were estimated by paternal half-sib correlation method from the data collected on 1092 steers sired by 26 sires in Kumamoto prefecture from 1975-1978. The data were analyzed according to a least-squares model which included effects due to year, sires within year, season at marketing and regression (linear and quadratic) on age. Heritabilities obtained were: average daily gain 0.64; final weight 0.59; slaughter weight 0.58; carcass weight 0.62; dressing percentage 0.55; rib eye area 0.42; marbling score 0.50 and carcass grade 0.48. The genetic, environmental and phenotypic correlations among growth and carcass traits were similar to results reported on British beef breeds by other workers. Correlated responses in carcass traits to the selection for preslaughter traits were also evaluated. Applying on-farm progeny testing to sire evaluation is effective if data are adjusted for the effects of year, age and season at marketing, etc.
