Hyaluronic acid oligosaccharides containing 5 or more disaccharide units from 1:1 complexes with [calf nasal septa] proteoglycan, binding strongly with an association constant K estimated to be at least 50 .mu.M-1. Smaller oligosaccharides appear to bind, K being about 1-2 .mu.M-1. Results are consistent with the observed competitive displacement of macromolecular hyaluronic acid from proteoglycan binding sites by oligosaccharides containing no fewer than 5 disaccharide units.
