Biochemical effects of the intoxication of aedes aegypti insecta diptera larvae by the delta endotoxin of bacillus thuringiensis israelensis ii. abdominal lipids

The various abdomen lipid classes were separated and determined in 4th instar larvae of Aedes aegypti (Diptera, Culicidae) over a 30 min to 36 hrs period following their immersion in water containing 0.00-0.01-0.02-0.10-1.00 mg .cntdot. l-1 of a 12,000 I.U. mg-1 preparation of the .delta.-endotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis. In control larvae, triacylglycerols (TG) and phospholipids (PL) respectively accounted for 63% and 25% of total lipids, free fatty acids (FA) for 10% and steroids (St) for 1.8%. Diacyl 1-2 and 1-3 glycerols (DG) and monoacylglycerols (MG) were present in trace amounts only. The toxin effects decrease the levels of TG (dose 0.02 mg .cntdot. l-1) and increase those of FA, DG and St (dose 0.01 and 1.0 mg.cntdot. l-1). The dose/effect relation plotted for FA, shows a biphasic type 2 hrs after treatment, with an increase at low doses followed by a decrease at the highest ones. The curve is however continuously decreasing in the larvae which had reached the agony stage: in this case only, the ED50 was nearly identical to the LD50.
