The biochemical effects of ginseng saponin on lipid, protein and nucleic acid metabolism were studied by observing the growth and analysis of the above components in Escherichia coli cells grown in basic medium containing various saponin concentrations. The growth of E. coli (strong AD01 and W-3110) was most active when the saponin concentration in the culture media was 10-3-10-2%. When the saponin concentration was over 10-1%, bacterial growth was considerably impaired. Similar pattern of the saponin effect on glucose oxidation by E. coli (W-3110) was also observed. The moderate amounts of ginseng saponin (10-3-10-2%) stimulated lipid, protein and nucleic acid biosynthesis in E. coli. (AD01), which resulted in faster growth of this organism. Using glucose-U-14C confirmed the above results that moderate amounts of ginseng saponin stimulated lipid, protein and nucleic acid metabolism of E. coli (AD01) grown in basic medium.
