The effects of ginseng saponin, 1 of the major components of Panax ginseng roots were observed on pig cardiac NADP+ specific isocitrate dehydrogenase [ICDH(NADP+), EC 1.1.1.42] and NAD+ specific isocitrate dehydrogenase [ICDH(NAD+), EC 1.1.1.41] in the absence and presence of adenine nucleotides such as AMP, ADP, ATP and NADPH in vitro. Ginseng saponin behaves amphoterically and its action might be dependent not only upon its own concentration but also upon the nature and concentration of substrate and effectors.
