A comparative account of biomass of photosynthetic bacterioplankton and phytoplankton is given for the 2 aquatic biotopes (estuary and mangrove) of Porto Novo [India]. The bacteriochlorophyll concentration ranges between 29.39 mg/m3 and 30.23 mg/m3 in the waterways of the mangroves and 16.79 mg/m3 and 17.63 mg/m3 in the estuary. The chlorophyll a concentration ranges between 8.38 mg/m3 and 24.57 mg/mm3 in the mangrove biotope and, 12.65 mg/m3 and 24.73 mg/m3 in the estuarine biotope. The hydrographical features such as salinity, temperature, dissolved O2, light extinction coefficient and pH of the 2 biotopes and the nature of their distributions are discussed. Salinity, dissolved O2 and pH values are higher in the estuary than in the mangroves. The phytoplankton contributing to the biomass in the 2 biotopes are given.
