Biometrical characterization of pollen grains of karelian birch and white birch from the gorce population poland



Fragmenta Floristica et Geobotanica 22(4): 417-422



Material was collected from the Gorce [Poland] population of Betula verrucosa var. carelica (Merklin) Hejtmanek and B. verrucosa Ehrh. Pollen grains (4200) were measured from 42 trees of each taxon. The results, verified by F and t tests showed that pollen grains of B. verrucosa var. carelica are smaller and less variated with regard to their dimension than pollen grains of B. verrucosa. Percentage distribution of pollen grain dimensions testified to the heterogeneity of the studied population. These results pertain to the population and to individual plants.
