Breed variations of gene frequencies in pig red cell phospho hexose isomerase 6 phospho gluconate dehydrogenase phospho gluco mutase and adenosine deaminase enzyme systems and their availability for paternity test

Hemolysates of 464 individuals taken randomly from 4 pig breed populations (Landrace, Hampshire, Large White and Duroc) in Japan were analyzed electrophoretically to determine breed differences for phenotype and gene frequencies in red cell PHI [phosphohexose isomerase] 6PGD [6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase], PGM [phosphoglucomutase] and ADA [adenosine deaminase]. The probability of excluding 1 of the 2 possible boars in a paternity test was estimated in each breed using the gene frequencies calculated for each enzyme system. PHI, 6PGD, PGM and ADA enzymes were polymorphic in all the breeds investigated and the known alleles were observed in each enzyme system. The PHIA and PHIB alleles were found in all breeds and all breeds exhibited a high PHIB frequency. In the 6PGD system, a marked difference in 6PGDA and 6PGDB allele frequencies was present among the 4 breeds. The 6PGDA allele had a higher frequency in the Hampshire and Large White breeds, than in the Duroc breed. The PGMB allele had a higher frequency in all breeds than the PGMA allele, and the occurrence of PGMA was especially rare in the Large White breed. In the ADA system, a remarkable difference was observed among the frequencies of 4 phenotypes in the breed populations investigated. In the Landrace and Large White breeds, 3 alleles (ADAA, ADAB and ADAO) were present, but ADAB was not present in the Hampshire breed and ADAO was not present in the Duroc breed. The ADAA allele had the highest frequency in Duroc, Large White and Landrace breeds, while ADAO was most frequent in the Hamsphire breed. The combined exclusion probability using these 4 enzyme systems was 0.482 in Landrace, 0.329 in Duroc, 0.326 in Large White and 0.214 in Hampshire. The combined probability of exclusion as calculated using 18 loci (7 blood groups, 5 serum proteins, 2 serum allotypes and 4 red cell enzymes) was 0.926 in Landrace, 0.883 in Large White, 0.829 in Hamsphire and 0.814 in Duroc breed.
