C banding and sister chromatid exchanges in 3 species of the genus allium allium cepa allium ascalonicum and allium sativum

C-banding and differential staining of sister chromatids by the FPG [fluorescent plus Giemsa] technique after BrdU [5-bromodeoxyuridine] incorporation into DNA was performed in A. cepa, A. ascalonicum and A. sativum. Despite the similarity in the karyotypes, the study of C-banding pattern of these 3 spp. revealed important differences existing between A. sativum (Section Allium) and the other 2 spp. (Section Schoenoprasum). A lower than expected frequency of SCEs [sister chromatid exchanges] was observed in A. ascalonicum, on the basis of its DNA-content and pattern of constitutive heterochromatin.
