Canine heartworm dirofilaria immitis

Canine heartworm is a potential threat to the canine population of South Africa posed by importation of dogs infected with D. immitis. The disease can be transmitted by the mosquitoes Aedes spp., Anopheles spp., Culex spp., and Mansonia spp. Pathophysiology, clinical symptoms, diagnosis and treatment with thiacetarsamide, dithiazanine or diethylcarbamazine are described.
