Carbon 13 nmr spectroscopy of pyrrolizidine alkaloids

The 13C NMR spectra of 9 pyrrolizidine alkaloids [of the genus Senecio] of the macrocyclic diester type, 7 of the corresponding N-oxides and of the parent base retronecine were recorded and the signals assigned. The 13C NMR signals were sensitive to structural variation in the diester moiety and the heterocyclic ring system, providing useful information for structural elucidation, particularly when the 1H NMR spectra may be difficult to interpret.
