Carcass composition studies 3. influences of age sex and calorie protein content of the diet on carcass composition of japanese quail

Studies were conducted to determine if feeding quail diets varying widely in calorie:protein ratio during the period of rapid growth rate would have a significant effect on body composition. Japanese quail from the random-bred control population of the Southern Regional Poultry Breeding Project were used in 2 experiments. Five diets varying in protein levels from 15-30% and containing .apprx. 3200 kcal ME[metabolizable energy]/kg were fed for 6 wk in experiment 1 and 7 wk in experiment 2. Quail were sacrificed at 2, 4 and 6 wk of age in experiments 1 and 3, 5 and 7 wk of age in experiment 2 and analyzed for moisture, N, lipid and ash. The results indicate that > 24% protein was needed in the diet for maximum growth rate. No positive correlation was obtained between calorie: protein ratio of the diet and lpid content of the carcass. In both experiments there were significant diet .times. age effects on lipid content of the carcass. The carcass of highest fat content was obtained in quail receiving the high protein diet. The water content of the carcasses decreased with increasing levels of protein in the diet and with age, while the protein level in the carcass increased with higher protein levels in the diet and as the birds grew older.
