Cavernous hemangioma of the retina report of three cases

Cavernous hemangioma of the retina report of three cases

Folia Ophthalmologica Japonica 39(5): 799-806

Cavernous hemangioma of the retina is an unusual vascular hamartoma comprised of saccular aneurysms containing venous blood, occasionally coexisting with vascular anomalies of the skin and central nervous system. The following characteristic fluorescein angiographic features have been reported. 1. During the arteriovenous phase, the vascular spaces gradually fill with dye. Later angiograms show fluorescein plasma-erythrocyte layering within the saccular aneurysms. 2. There is no leakage of the dye into surrounding tissues; usually ophthalmoscopy shows subretinal hemorrhage and exudate. The present report concerns three patients with cavernous hemangiomas of the retina. Two were female (32 and 24 years), one was male (5 years old). The three showed fluorescein plasma-erythrocyte layering on their fluorescein angiograms, with no vascular anomalies of the skin or central nervous system. Treatment of the cavernous hemangiomas was not attempted, since there was no loss of visual acuity and no subretinal or vitreous hemorrhage in the female patients, while the boy had degeneration of the macula with epiretinal membrane. Recovery of his visual acuity was thus not expected. After follow-up periods of between 2 months and 2 years, there have been no changes in the cavernous hemangiomas.
