Cerebro spinal fluid cytology of intra cranial volume requiring processes in infancy

The value of information obtained in the CSF of 86 infants with intracranial volume-requiring processes [IVRP] was assessed. CSF was obtained by lumbar puncture of the children examined, 19% had malignancies, 64% had benign diseases and 17% had unclassified IVRP. Cytological methods of evaluation are emphasized. These methods disclosed pleocytoses in 39% of the children; these occurred preferentially at medulloblastomes. Fifteen percent of the CSF cellular sediments were positive for tumors. These results were correct 50% of the time for malignant neoplasms. Most of the cellular sediments showed increased numbers of granulocytes. Immunocompetent cells were found in 38% of the differential sediments; these cells were most commonly found in CSF from patients with malignancies.
