Change in the epidemiology of muco cutaneous leishmaniasis in the ribeira valley sao paulo brazil

Change in the epidemiology of muco cutaneous leishmaniasis in the ribeira valley sao paulo brazil

Revista do Instituto Adolfo Lutz 40(1): 49-54

A total of 229 cases identified clinically as of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis were recorded in various localities on the Ribeira Valley, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Laboratory confirmation (parasite identificaton) was obtained for 28.4% of the cases. Of the patients, 80% were domestics, students, teachers or pre-schoolers and did not have frequent stays in the tropical forest. The vector, Psychodopygus intermedius, had crepuscular and nocturnal activities and an anthrophilic and eurytope behavior. Probably, the disease is transmitted at home and/or around the home, rather than in the forest. The professional character (forest working) of the disease is seemingly not predominant in the localities studied.
