Changes in body composition of young whole male limousin bulls between 9 and 19 months of age 2. chemical composition and calorific value

Changes in the chemical composition of the tissues and the empty body of Limousin bulls fed ad lib, between 9 - 19 mo. of age are described. The variations in the weight of tissues and offals are described. Five animals were slaughtered at 304, 440, 543 and 646 kg body wt and the chemical composition (water, lipids, proteins, ashes and energy) of the different parts of the empty body was determined. The changes in the body composition were expressed in terms of allometric relationships. The particularities of Limousin bulls are shown: for the same lean body mass, there was no difference between Limousin bulls and Friesian bulls or Angus or Hereford steers in the protein weight, but there were very large differences in the lipid weight. Protein growth variations between the 3 types of animals are illustrated. The protein growth rate (protein growth/empty body protein weight) of Limousin bulls was 20-30% higher than that of earlier maturing animals of the same weight. The efficiency of protein and muscle growth evidently was higher in Limousin bulls.
