Changes in inbreeding intensities and effect of different degrees of inbreeding on body weight and semen production in black pied dairy bulls
Inbreeding intensities were studied in 17,796 young bulls of Black-Pied dairy breed (born between 1974 and 1985) from various bull raising stations. The results revealed that about 9% of the bulls were almost only moderately inbred, although the percentage of moderately inbred bulls had increased from 2.5% in 1974 to 14% in 1981 due to breeding for a new type, and had then declined again or inbreeding had been shifted to the third generation. Inbreeding coefficient averaged only 0.53%, the initial, maximum, and final values coming up to 0.18% (1974), 0.97% (1981), and 0.68% (1985), respectively. Altogether four Friesian bulls made up for about 70% of the total inbreeding intensity. With increasing degree inbreeding led to depressions in body weight and semen production in the bulls as compared with their outbred half brothers (control). These depressions were found to vary greatly, especially between the different developmental stages. Minor depressions in ejaculate volume were only found in older, intensively inbred bulls. As a result, the number of semen pellets produced from inbred bulls was lower regarding both absolute quantities and pellet numbers per ejaculate and unit time. however, inbred bulls meet the requirements of the national standard regulations for artificial insemination.
