Changes in nitrogen phosphorus and potassium during vegetative period in some plant organs

The soil nutrients and the percentual changes in plant organs were studied during the vegetation period in a Carolino-Caricetum sempervirentis association dominated by Carex sempervirens in a pre-alpine stage, also in a Seslerio-Semperviretum in the montane stage, and in a neighboring Caricetum ferrugineae with dominant Carex ferruginea, also in the montane stage. The percentage of N, P and K attains its highest value at the beginning of the vegetation period, decreases in mid-period and rises again toward the end of the vegetation period. The nutrient content, both in the soil and in plant organs, is higher for associations in the montane stage than in the prealpine stage. There is a clear correlation between the amount of nutrients available in the soil and that present in plant organs. The nutrient content of the soil can be estimated with the aid of reference values, but to determine the nutrient content in the soil for given plant species or associations with an undetermined physiological development phase during a vegetation period, it is necessary to have a reference curve of nutrient values.
