Mouse morulae and young blastocysts cultivated in vitro from the 2-cell stage differ from controls of the same age developed in situ by the absence of 5' nucleotidase activity on the external membrane of the trophectoderm. The enzymic activity normally present at the surface of the blastocyst on the 4th day tends to disappear at the time of implantation (5th day). It is maintained when the blastocyst is kept in delay of implantation by ovariectomy, with or without progesterone treatment, and tends to disappear following the activation by estradiol-17 .beta. Evolution of 5' nucleotidase activity probably reflects structural changes of the external membrane of the trophectoderm prior to implantation. It is compared to the behavior of antigenic activities detected at the surface of the blastocyst.
