Changes in the levels of endogenous cyto kinin like substances during cold induced germination of acer platanoides seeds

Embryo-dormant seeds of A. platanoides show a clearly defined but transient peak of endogenous cytokinin-like substances during the early stages of germination following an inductive chilling period. Maintenance of the fruits at chilling temperatures until germination was visible probably extended the period over which these changes in cytokinin levels occurred, making their observation easier. This transient peak of cytokinin activity in germinating A. platanoides seeds is probably analogous to the ephemeral peaks in cytokinin activity observed in the germination of non-dormant species. The possibility that there are 2 transient peaks of cytokinin-like activity in embryo dormant seeds, one that is related to the breaking of dormancy and a 2nd that is related to the germination, is discussed.
