Chemical control of sorghum sorghum bicolor tissue borers

Field trials were conducted during 3 kharif seasons, 1968-1969 to 1970-1971, to determine the efficacy of different insecticides for the control of shootfly, Atherigona soccata (Rondani) and stem borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe). Phorate 10% granules at the rate of 1.5 kg a.i.[active ingredient]/ha proved most effective and significantly superior for the control of shoot fly when compared to all other treatments. The insecticides endrin at the rate of 0.098-0.3 kg a.i./ha, carbaryl 0.65-2.0 kg a.i./ha, lindane 0.13-0.4 kg a.i./ha, DDT 0.8-2.50 kg a.i./ha and phenthoate 0.16-0.5 kg a.i./ha, respectively, proved promising for the control of stem borer both from efficacy and yield points of view.
