A chemotaxis assay using modified Boyden chamber was performed to examine a chemotaxis in water soluble components in the lens from eye bank eyes and cataract eyes, to the human polymorphonuclear leukocytes, a chemotactic activity was measured by the leading front technique of Zigmond and Hirsch. The results were as follows. A chemotactic activity in water soluble components in the lens to human polymorphonuclear leucocytes was found in the aged group over 40 yr old and increased with advancing age in both eye bank eyes and cataract eyes. There were no relationship between grade of opacity of the lens and a chemotactic activity. The high chemotactic activity was revealed in the aqueous humor in hypermaure cataractous eyes, but not in that of immature cataractous eyes. These results suggested that low MW components in he human crystallin lens denatured by aging have chemotactic factors to human polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and may induce the inflammation.
