Chorionic villi biopsy as a method in prenatal diagnosis

Chorionic villi biopsy as a method in prenatal diagnosis

Medicina 23(3-4): 115-118

Chorionic villi sampling was performed on 40 patients prior to elective termination of their pregnancies. The gestational ages were between 5-10 weeks. This was an initial experinece with chorionic villi sampling, both with regard to the obstetrical and laboratory procedures. The technique used for obtaining chorionic villi samples was transcervical aspiration with Portex catheter under ultrasonography. A modification of the metod of Simoni et al. (1984, 1986) and Tharapel et al. (1986) was used for the chromosome preparations of the villi. Direct chromosome preparations and karyotyping was successful in 33 cases (82.5%). We diagnosed: 19 male karyotypes (46,XY), and 13 female karyotypes (46,XX) and one abnormal chromosome constitution (47,XX, + 16).
