Chromosome homology of avena magna and the hexa ploid species avena sativa and avena byzantina

Chromosome homology of avena magna and the hexa ploid species avena sativa and avena byzantina

Crop Science 16(3): 425-428

Homology of A. magna and the hexaploid species A. sativa and A. byzantina chromosomes was determined by the use of telosomes of the hexaploid species. F1 hybrids with 34 chromosomes + 1 telosome were produced from crosses between A. magna used at the male parent and 9 telosomic lines of A. sativa and 1 of A. byzantina. Microsporocytes of each F1 hybrid were analyzed for the presence of a heteromorphic bivalent involving the telosome. Heteromorphic bivalents observed in 4 hybrids from the telosomic lines indicated that 4 chromosomes of A. magna are homologous with those 4 telosomes of the hexaploid species. Two of the telosomes involved in the heteromorphic bivalents are included in the As genome of the standard karyotype of hexaploid oats.
