Three variations of an Acidified Boiling Water (ABW) system for cleaning and sanitizing milking machines were compared with an iodophor/alkali control system in a field study on 16 Victorian farms over an 18-wk period. In the 3 ABW treatments, a cold water post-milking rinse was followed by hot acidic detergent and a final rinse of hot water. The cleaning system was applied after every milking, either as the only cleaning procedure or in conjunction with a weekly or monthly alkaline wash. Excellent milk quality results (total [microbe] count, thermoduric count, preliminary incubation methylene blue test, methylene blue reductase test) were obtained with all treatments, including the control system. Milking machine surfaces were visually cleaner on farms using ABW with weekly alkaline wash than on farms with the other ABW treatments. I concentrations in milk from the farms using iodophor sanitizer were below the currently accepted limit of 500 .mu.g I/l, the means ranging from 120 .mu.g I/l in peak lactation to 245 and 305 .mu.g I/l after 5 and 7 mo. of lactation. I concentrations in milk from farms using the ABW treatments were less than 100 .mu.g I/l. Chemical and hot water costs for the preferred ABW system (with a weekly alkaline wash) averaged 4.86 cents/cluster per milking compared with 4.03 cents for the iodophor-based system. Times required for these 2 cleaning systems were 1.4 and 1.8 min/cluster per milking, respectively.
