Clinical observation of 144 cases of rheumatoid arthritis treated with glycoside of Radix Tripterygium Wilfordii

Clinical observation of 144 cases of rheumatoid arthritis treated with glycoside of Radix Tripterygium Wilfordii

Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine 3(2): 125-129

Satisfactory results were obtained in the treatment of 144 cases of rheumatoid arthritis with glycoside extracted from Radix Tripterygium Wilfordii. Total effective rate was 93.3% (clinical remission 17.6%, effective 37.5% and improvement 38.2%). The course of treatment was 3 mo., dosage 1-1.5 mg/kg per os [orally]. Side effects included mild gastrointestinal disturbances. There also occurred irregular menstruation and amenorrhea in female patients and gynecomastia in males. These adverse reactions subsided after withdrawal of the drug. Clinical and laboratory observation suggested that the mechanism of the glycoside action was suppression of cellular and humoral immunity.
