Clinical studies on glucose nonfermentative gram negative bacilli isolated from patients with urinary tract infections

Clinical investigation was conducted on glucose non-fermentative gram-negative bacilli (GNF-GNB) except for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, isolated from in-patients with urinary tract infections at the Okayama University Hospital, Japan, during 1976-1979. Isolation rate of GNF-GNB increased annually: 0.5% (1976); 1.3% (1977); 2.3% (1978); and 14.8% (1979). Fifty strains of GNF-GNB were isolated in 1979. P. putida (19 strains) was most frequently detected, followed by Acinetobacter (16 strains), P. putrefaciens (4 strains), Flavobacterium meningosepticum (4 strains), P. maltophilia (3 strains), P. cepacia (2 strains) and Alcaligenes faecalis (2 strains), respectively. GNF-GNB showed a high susceptibility rate to minocycline, but were resistant to .beta.-lactam antibiotics. Conditions of host and bacteriological background were investigated and antimicrobial agents used when GNF-GNB were isolated. All strains were isolated from patients with complicated urinary tract infections and most strains were found in postoperative (72%) and catheterized (78%) patients. Most cases were treated with .beta.-lactam antibiotics; mixed infections were found in 48%. GNF-GNB usually disappeared and follow-up urine culture examinations were done during hospitalization. Colonization of GNF-GNB into the urinary tract could be transient.
