Heat tolerance and weight gain in 5/8 Holstein .times. 3/8 Zebu (inter-se), 5/8 H .times. 3.8 Z and 3/4 H .times. 1/4 Z heifer calves were compared. Animals were kept under similar management and feeding conditions during the rainly season (Aug.-Oct.) in Cuba. Rectal temperature (RT) did not differ significantly among crossbreeds, whereas respiratory rate (RR) was higher at 14:00 h in 3/4 H .times. 1/4 Z calves. A significant effect (P < 0.001) of ambient temperature and relative humidity on both physiological indicators was evident in all racial groups. RT/RR correlation showed a greater use of RR in inter-se (r = 0.9299) and 3/4 H .times. 1/4 Z (r = 0.9407), in contrast to 5/8 H .times. 3/8 Z (r = 0.7600) animals. No significant differences were obtained for weight gain among racial groups. According to the results, a decrease of adaptive capacity of 5/8 H .times. 3/8 Z inter-se crossbreed is inferred.
