Comparative in vitro activity of four quinolones and four other agents against enteropathogens

The in vitro activity of eight antimicrobial agents, including four quinolones, against 108 strains of enteropathogens was determined. Resistance was documented for ampicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and timethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in one or more bacterial groups. All Salmonella, Shigella, and Yersinia were susceptible to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, but only 21.1% of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli were inhibited by this antibiotic. All strains were susceptible to the quinolones. Nalidixic acid was the less active quinolone. Ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and pefloxacin had a high in vitro activity against all enteropathogens tested.
