Comparative social behavior of adult female rhesus macaques macaca mulatta and bonnet macaques macaca radiata

Comparative social behavior of adult female rhesus macaques macaca mulatta and bonnet macaques macaca radiata

Zeitschrift fuer Tierpsychologie 59(1): 1-6

Ten bonnet and 11 rhesus macaque .female.female. were observed for 5 mo. to evaluate differences between the 2 spp. in patterns of social behavior with non-kin. Data were collected during 15 min focal animal follows, twice weekly for each .female. Both durations and frequencies of social interactions with non-kin were evaluated. Bonnet .female.female. approached, contacted, embraced and huddled with others more often than rhesus .female.female. did. No differences were seen in other intimate social behaviors. Although bonnet .female.female. may contact others more frequently, they are not necessarily more affiliative than rhesus .female.female. are.
