Five hundred-84 lactations of 239 5/8Holstein-3/8Zebu, 3/4Holstein-1/4Zebu, and Holstein Friesian cows, distributed in two farm units with different husbandry conditions (better for herd A), but with similar management, were studied. Daily mean production (Dmp), and major and mineral milk components were determined by monthly samplings at morning and afternoon milkings. A highly significant effect was shown regarding Dmp and milk components, except for Ca; herd-race interaction was likewise significant in Dmp and Na (p < 0.001), and in protein and K (p < 0.05). The better performance of herd A and crossbreed 5/8H-3/8Z in relation to 3/4H-1/4Z, as well as both with regard to Holstein Friesian, with independence of the farm unit, is highlighted. A certain interaction between herd and racial peculiarities is referred to, the better capacity of crossbreed 5/8H-3/8Z for stabilizing regulation mechanisms of lactation in adverse conditions being evident.
