Comparison of rare phospho gluco mutase 1 ec 2.7.5.1 variants by iso electric focusing and conventional electrophoresis identification of 5 new variants

A comparison of specimens tested in the laboratory for the [human] red cell enzyme subsystem PGM1 [phosphoglucomutase1] by isoelectric focusing and conventional electrophoresis demonstrated 11 rare allotypes. In addition to the allotypes .**GRAPHIC**. .**GRAPHIC**. .**GRAPHIC**. .**GRAPHIC**. .**GRAPHIC**. and .**GRAPHIC**. 5 new variants were identified: .**GRAPHIC**. .**GRAPHIC**. .**GRAPHIC**. .**GRAPHIC**. and .**GRAPHIC**. Of the 5 new variants only .**GRAPHIC**. and .**GRAPHIC**. could be separated from common PGM1 variants on conventional electrophoresis. Because of the unique banding patterns for the variants observed, it was necessary to use both isoelectric focusing and conventional methods for proper identification. Due to the presence of several different nomenclatures for naming PGM variants, it is felt that a universal nomenclature should be defined to deal with PGM variants using both methods of analysis.
