Compounds regulating synthesis of glyoxalic acid from ribose 5 phosphate in extracts from chloroplasts

Glyoxalic acid is synthesized from ribose-5-phosphate (R5P) in extracts from the chloroplasts of horse bean leaves obtained by osmotic shock. Its accumulation depends on the concentration of proteins in the extract, H ions, R5P, ATP. AMP, MgCl2, molecular oxygen, inorganic orthophosphate and pyrophosphate, NaHCO3, phosphoenolpyruvate, and dithiothreitol which reduces the sulfhydryl groups of enzymes. Glyoxalic acid is synthesized from R5P only in the presence of ATP which cannot be substituted by other substances tested. They stimulate or inhibit R5P assimilation, oxygen uptake and accumulation of glyoxalic acid. The results are also discussed in terms of the pathway of glyoxalic acid synthesis, and the sites and mechanisms of action of the substances studied on accumulation of glyoxalic acid.
