Compression testing of foamed plastics and rubbers for use as orthotic shoe insoles

Prosthetics & Orthotics International 6(1): 48-52

Materials (31) were tested in compression in order to generate the stress (force/unit of cross-sectional area) vs. strain (deformation) behavior, for the purpose of assessing the suitability of various foamed plastics and rubbers as show insole materials. The materials could be classified into 3 distinct categories (Very stiff, moderately deformable and very deformable) according to the shape of the characteristics stress vs. strain curve. The moderately deformable group was selected as the most promising for clinical application.
