Compulsive checking diminished when over checking instructions were disobeyed

Four patients with obsessive-compulsive checking behavior residual to previous successful treatment of other compulsive symptoms, were instructed in a behavioral technique designed along the lines of the "safety signals" hypothesis. They showed remarkable improvement in spite of the fact that they did not follow the instructions. Some hypotheses regarding the basis of the changes obtained are put forward.
