Computation of distribution of mechanical time constants in the lungs moment analysis of spirogram

Computation of distribution of mechanical time constants in the lungs moment analysis of spirogram

Yonago Acta Medica 29(3): 205-216

It was hypothesized that the distribution of mechanical time constants in the lungs is lognormal. The median (.mu.) and standard deviation (.sigma.) of a lognormal distribution were computed by moment analysis of the forced spirogram according to the method of Permutt and Menkes (1979). Spirograms theoretically reconstructed according to .mu. and .sigma. were compared with actual ones in asthmatic patients. The theoretical and actual spirographic indices fitted well for forced expiratory volume in one second and maximal midexpiratory flow. In conclusion, .mu. and .sigma. are valuable indices expressing the mechanical behavior of the lungs with diffuse airway obstructions.
