To known dynamic changes of pH and PCO2 of the body fluid under hypoxia and hypercapnia, pH and PCO2 of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the cisterna magna were measured continuously and simultaneously with newly developed sensors made of ion-sensitive field effect transistor, and compared to the behaviour of PCO2 of the arterial blood and end-expiratory gas on dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital and artificially ventilated. Both on exposure to hypercapnia (5 and 10%, 8 min) and to hypoxia (10 and 13%, 8-30 min), changes in pH and PCO2 of CSF were smaller, slower and more linear than changes in PCO2 of arterial blood and end-expiratory gas. These differences suggest the existence of some active processes between the blood and CSF. Simultaneously measured CSF pressure (at the lateral ventricle) increased on both exposures, whereas blood pressure decreased during hypercapnia and increased during hypoxia.
