Control of rhizoctonia solani parasitic on cotton gossypium hirsutum with the nematode aphelenchus avenae

Studies were carried out to improve techniques for mass production of the nematode A. avenae and to determine optimum levels of application to control R. solani on cotton. In vitro multiplication of A. avenae was influenced by several factors. The nematode rate of multiplication varied with the species and with the strains of the fungus and could be 10 times higher on some fungal strains than on others. Differences were observed between nematode populations. Two parthenogenetic populations reproduced well, while an amphimictic population reproduced poorly. A. avenae could be raised on fungal cultures in liquid medium in an experimental fermentation unit. The nematode inoculum was preserved in liquid medium fungal cultures at 5.degree. or in anhydrobiosis which required slow dehydration and rehydration. Experiments with biological control of R. solani were done in pots. The nematode inoculum was incorporated into the soil or coated on seeds. Seed coating gave good results and a reduction in disease severity was obtained with 1000 nematodes/cotton seed; 5000 nematodes/cotton seed were necessary to give significant differences in germination: 87% for treated seeds to 47% for untreated seeds.
