Convergence of somatic and visceral afferent impulses in parafascicular nucleus of rat

Single unit discharges of 45 neurons in the parafascicular nucleus of immobilized rats in response to separate stimulations of N. vagus, N. splanchnus major, N. sciaticus, M. suralis, testis and epididymis were recorded and analyzed. Five patterns of the responses could be distinguished according to response latency, discharge duration and spike density distribution, which are considered to be contingent on the sensory nature of the stimulation. Among the 45 units studied, 29 showed response patterns characteristic of nociception and received convergence of somatic and visceral afferents. Two units were found to respond exclusively to visceral stimuli. The result is interpreted as indicating that the parafascicular nucleus is not only a thalamic structure for reception of visceral pain but also a center for integration of visceral and somatic pain afferent impulses.
