In 122 landraces of pearl millet [P. typhoides (Burm. f.) Stapf and C.E. Hubb.] from Rajasthan, grain yield showed correlations only with tiller number and ear girth. At the phenotypic level, only tiller number was the primary yield component and early maturity, thinner stem, shorter leaves and shorter ears were secondary components. The primary and secondary components accounted for 75% variation in grain yield. At the genotypic level, in addition to the above traits, plant height, number of nodes and ear girth also seem to have direct as well as indirect effects.
