Corticotropin releasing factor stimulates alpha msh secretion and cyclic amp accumulation in rat pars intermedia cells

Ovine corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) stimulates .alpha.-MSH release and cAMP accumulation in rat pars intermedia cells in culture at ED50 values of 1 and 6 nM, respectively. The stimulatory effect of CRF on both parameters is inhibited by the dopaminergic agonist 2-bromo-.alpha.-ergocriptine (CB-154). CRF is a potent stimulator of peptide secretion in the intermediate lobe of the pituitary gland and a role of this pituitary lobe in the response to stress is suggested. In addition, a role of cAMP as mediator of the action of CRF in pars cells was indicated.
