Cottonseed vs cottonseed cake feeding effect on the utilization of feed nutrients by the nonproducing sahiwal cows bos indicus

Cottonseed vs cottonseed cake feeding effect on the utilization of feed nutrients by the nonproducing sahiwal cows bos indicus

Indian Journal of Animal Sciences 47(11): 698-703

In a feeding-cum-metabolism trial, 3 groups of (4 animals each) non-producing mature Sahiwal cows, in a randomized block design, were fed with either cotton seed or one of the cotton seed-cakes (decorticated and undecorticated). A fixed amount of cereal green fodder (5 kg) and ad lib feeding of wheat straw was practiced. Except for the ether extract, the intake and utilization of various feed nutrients was maximum in the group of animals fed decorticated cotton seed-cake. The intake of DCP [digestible crude protein] and the digestibility of crude fiber in the group fed decorticated cake was highly significant (P < 0.01) over the other 2 groups. The decorticated cotton seed-cake replace the whole cotton seed in the ration of dairy cattle.
