Crystals of tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase were obtained from beef pancreas, this being the 1st time that an aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase was crystallized from a multicellular organism. Crystallization was carried out with a lithium sulfate solution at pH 7.4 by vapor diffusion during 2-3 wk, which produced crystals of 0.15-0.2 .times. 0.09 .times. 0.05 mm. Larger crystals of 0.8 .times. 0.15 .times. 0.1 mm were grown in 48 h when crystallization was performed in an ultracentrifuge.
