Cyanide levels higher than 200 mg/kg of green pasture were obtained in 15 .times. 15 m area of star grass (Cynodon nlemfuensis), fertilized with 1 t of NO3NH3/hectare per year in rainy and dry seasons. In order to confirm the influence of nitrogen fertilization in the increase of cyanogenic levels of star grass and its relation with rainy periods, the experiment was repeated in the dry season. During the dry season only one value higher than 200 mg of cyanide/kg of green pasture was determined, precisely in the only week where precipitations were intense (days 50-56 following fertilization).
