Cyto embryological studies in self incompatible populations of ranunculus penicillatus from poland

The causes of seed failure in 2 Polish populations of R. penicillatus were determined. In some PMC [pollen mother cells] disturbances were observed in the 1st and 2nd meiotic division: irregular chromosome pairing bridge formation and an abnormal chromosome distribution to the poles. They resulted in a high percentage of degenerating pollen grains (30-100%). Viable binucleate grains were also observed. Macrosporogenesis and the development of the female gametophyte were normal. In the majority of the ES [embryo sacs], however, further development became inhibited at this stage. Apparently this is due to the lack of fertilization resulting from a defective growth of the pollen tubes in the tissues of the pistil, a phenomenon typical of self-incompatibility; each of the respective populations represents a single clone propagating vegetatively by means of rhizomes. Development of the endosperm started in 14 ovules, attaining a maximum of 16 nuclei, but neither zygote nor embryo was observed in these ES. For a new habitat of R. penicillatus in Lwowek Slaski, the tetraploid chromosome number 2n = 32 is reported.
