Cyto embryological studies on the species of the genus viola section nomimium in poland

Cyto embryological studies on the species of the genus viola section nomimium in poland

Fragmenta Floristica et Geobotanica 24(1): 23-92

Investigations on wild mixed populations of the Viola L. genus in Poland was presented. Morphological, karyological and embryological studies were performed. They concern V. riviniana Rchb., V. silvestris Rchb., V. uliginosa Bess. and natural hybrids of V. riviniana and V. silvestris, as well as V. riviniana and V. uliginosa. The former hybrids occur fairly frequently, while the latter are rare. Length and breadth of spur petal and spur as well as the color and some details of chasmogamous flowers morphology are significant diagnostic criteria. V. riviniana is a tetraploid species with 2n = 40, while V. silvestris and V. uliginosa are diploids with 2n = 20. In some mixed populations the occurrence of triploid hybrids 2n = 30 and plants with 2n = 35 and 2n = approximately 36 was detected. Embryological analysis has shown a fairly low fertility of V. riviniana .times. V. silvestris hybrids and high sterility of V. riviniana .times. V. uliginosa hybrids. The significance of interspecific hybridization in the process of differentiation within Viola L. genus is also discussed.
